An Inquiry Into the Origin of Honor and the Usefulness of Christianity in War is a book written by Bernard Mandeville. In this book, Mandeville explores the origins of the concept of honor and its role in warfare. He argues that honor is a social construct that has evolved over time and is closely tied to the idea of reputation. Mandeville also examines the role of Christianity in warfare, questioning whether its teachings can be reconciled with the violence and bloodshed that often accompanies war. He argues that Christianity can be useful in promoting peace and morality, but that it is ultimately up to individuals to choose whether to follow its teachings. The book provides a thought-provoking analysis of the intersection of honor, religion, and warfare, and is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of these concepts.1732. Mandeville takes it for granted that a Christian is not bound to believe anything to have been of divine institution, that has not been declared to be such in Holy Writ. Great offense was taken at an essay, in the first part of the author’s Fable of the Bees, called An Inquiry into the Origin of Moral Virtue, notwithstanding the great caution it was written with. Since then, it is though criminal to surmise that even heathen virtue was of human invention and the reader, in the following dialogues, will find him to persist in the opinion that it was. Written in Old English text. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
