As famílias com dois pais ainda podem ser vistas como o ideal, apesar do aumento atual das famílias monoparentais devido a várias razões. Os efeitos que os pais têm sobre os filhos em crescimento abrangem todas as áreas das suas vidas, incluindo os estudos e a carreira. O estudo procurou explorar a influência dos tipos de parentalidade no desempenho académico dos alunos do ensino secundário público diurno no município de Nakuru, Quénia. O estudo empregou um desenho de investigação ex post facto, visando 17 escolas secundárias públicas diurnas no município. Cinco escolas foram selecionadas aleatoriamente, com dois professores selecionados propositadamente das cinco escolas. A população do estudo foi composta por 1875 alunos do terceiro ano. Um total de 145 alunos foi selecionado de ambos os tipos de parentalidade. Foram utilizadas estatísticas descritivas e inferenciais para analisar os dados. Os resultados deste estudo indicaram que o tipo de parentalidade influencia o desempenho académico dos alunos. Também foram observadas diferenças de género no desempenho académico em relação ao tipo de parentalidade.
