O tema do livro é a influência do contexto familiar no desenvolvimento da criança bilingue. Esta problemática é muito ampla, hoje em dia, porque em todo o mundo há muitos casamentos mistos com nacionalidades diferentes, que criam os seus filhos de forma bilingue. O livro está dividido em duas secções: secção teórica e secção prática. A secção teórica trata de uma descrição específica das famílias bilingues, métodos utilizados durante a educação de crianças bilingues e mitos sobre o bilinguismo. A parte prática consiste num estudo de caso de duas meninas: uma é bilingue desde o nascimento, porque um dos pais é estrangeiro, e a outra está a aprender uma segunda língua há dois anos. As meninas têm aproximadamente a mesma idade, com apenas alguns meses de diferença entre elas. A comparação será orientada para a produção em eslovaco e também em inglês.
