Complicações da ferida, tais como infeção, deiscência da ferida, hematoma local, cicatrização retardada ou formação de cicatrizes inestéticas, podem ser atribuídas aos materiais de sutura. As consequências são a inflamação dos tecidos circundantes e a formação de um reservatório para agentes patogénicos. Nesses biofilmes, as bactérias ficam ocultas das respostas imunitárias do hospedeiro e são muito menos suscetíveis aos antibióticos.
