Il saggio porta avanti delle suggestive ipotesi archeologiche sul sito di Inessa Etna, la cui localizzazione è rimasta fino ad oggi incerta, e del tempio di Efesto, menzionato da Claudio Eliano, circondato da mura, da alberi sacri e protetto da cani, che custodiva un fuoco perennemente alimentato. Le informazioni storiche conducono al sito archeologico presente sulla collina vulcanica di Paternò, nei pressi di una fumarola estinta nel XVII secolo. L’acropoli fu abbandonata nel II secolo d.C. per essere ripopolata dopo un lunghissimo periodo. Un mistero rimasto insoluto per anni dove i miti si intrecciano con la storia, la geologia e la religione.
