Molybdän (42Mo96) ist ein essentielles Spurenelement im menschlichen Körper, in Tieren und Pflanzen. Die bekannten molybdänhaltigen Enzyme übersteigen die Zahl von 50. Hochvalente Molybdänzentren sind charakteristisch für Oxomolybdän-Enzyme. Obwohl es mit zahlreichen physiologisch wichtigen Verbindungen Komplexe bilden kann, wurde angenommen, dass dieses Spurenelement in einfacher Molybdatform aufgenommen, transportiert und ausgeschieden wird. Aufgrund seiner Rolle bei den Prozessen der Stickstofffixierung und Nitratreduktion ist Molybdän für das normale Wachstum und die Entwicklung von Pflanzen unerlässlich, und manchmal ist es notwendig, das Substrat mit einigen Molybdänverbindungen anzureichern. Es wurde auch berichtet, dass Molybdän die Proteinsynthese sowie den Stoffwechsel von Phosphor, Schwefel, Kalium, Kupfer, Zink und Jod erheblich beeinflusst und dass die Zugabe dieses Spurenelements zum Futter das Wachstum mehrerer Haustierarten stimulierte.
