This pioneering work examines the establishment of a modern public health system in Madagascar, as a corollary to France’s colonial ambitions from 1896 - the year of annexation - to 1930, a pivotal year between the two world wars. An innovative and highly structured endeavour, the healthcare system thus established represents a major yet ambivalent step forward in Madagascar’s history. It both entrenched French colonisation and laid the foundations for a bold public health policy. These foundations remained virtually intact until 1974, forming the basis of an effective nationwide network supported by appropriate human and material resources.
