Die Topographie Westasiens ähnelt dem europäischen Kolonialismus. Westasien ist regional multipolar. Ägypten, Israel, Iran und Saudi-Arabien waren die ersten regionalen Pole. Ägypten und der Panarabismus sind in den 1970er Jahren zusammengebrochen. Die Macht in der arabischen Welt hat sich an den Golf verlagert. Die islamische Revolution im Iran 1979 führte zu einer weiteren Zersplitterung der Region. Der Iran und das Königreich Saudi-Arabien (KSA) konkurrieren entlang konfessioneller und ideologischer Linien um die regionale und islamische Weltherrschaft. Der Iran lehnte eine ausländische Einflussnahme auf die Sicherheit am Golf ab und unterstützte die Ablehnung der Palästinenser gegenüber der Allianz zwischen Israel und den USA. So bildeten die USA, Saudi-Arabien, die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate, Ägypten und Israel eine Anti-Iran-Koalition. Das Buch untersucht, wie Indien in den 1980er Jahren und nach dem Ende des Kalten Krieges die Blockbildung in Westasien und den Bilateralismus akzeptierte.
