As catástrofes são definidas como 'um evento de crise em que as exigências que estão a ser colocadas a um sistema humano, pelo evento, excedem a capacidade de resposta do sistema'. A literatura sobre catástrofes tem-se concentrado geralmente a nível individual e não tem em conta o contexto em que os indivíduos vivem e onde a catástrofe ocorreu.Poucos estudos utilizam residentes dentro de uma comunidade de catástrofes para definir os factores que são relevantes para a sua experiência de catástrofe, especialmente em cenários australianos. Este livro tem como objectivo compreender as comunidades sinistradas e quais os factores que indicam a resiliência das comunidades. Os resultados indicam a importância relativa da auto-eficácia para a experiência de stress e crescimento em catástrofes e que os diferentes estilos de lidar com as catástrofes estão indissociavelmente ligados uns aos outros.As contribuições deste estudo indicam que para as organizações de gestão de emergências não existe um método universal de prática.As comunidades locais precisam de ser compreendidas em termos dos seus contextos para desenvolver e implementar eficazmente programas de prevenção e resiliência da ajuda. Este livro será útil para aqueles que trabalham no campo da gestão de emergências, cientistas sociais e metodologistas.
