Área de Comércio Livre do Sul da Ásia (SAFTA), levando subsequentemente a uma União Aduaneira, Mercado Comum e União Económica. O Acordo SAFTA foi assinado em 6 de janeiro de 2004 durante a Décima Segunda Cimeira da SAARC, realizada em Islamabad, Paquistão. O Acordo entrou em vigor em 1 de janeiro de 2006, e o Programa de Liberalização Comercial teve início em 1 de julho de 2006. O objetivo do acordo é promover a concorrência na área e proporcionar benefícios equitativos aos países envolvidos. Visa beneficiar a população do país, trazendo transparência e integridade entre as nações. A SAFTA também foi formada com o objetivo de aumentar o nível de cooperação comercial e económica entre as nações da SAARC, reduzindo as tarifas e barreiras e também para proporcionar preferência especial aos Países Menos Desenvolvidos (PMD) entre as nações da SAARC.
