La risposta dell’organismo allo stress è un meccanismo adattivo che serve a mantenere l’omeostasi nel momento dello stress e a preparare l’organismo a situazioni simili che potrebbero ripetersi in futuro. La risposta allo stress esercita quindi un’influenza sui processi di codifica dell’attenzione e della memoria dall’inizio della situazione stressante e nelle sue conseguenze, quando entrano in gioco i processi di consolidamento. Questo lavoro ha studiato in tre studi gli effetti dello stress sui processi di fissazione, sulla memoria olfattiva e sulla memoria immediata degli oggetti. Uno studio di eye tracking ha esaminato se lo stress, indotto con il Trier Social Stress Test, influenzi la fissazione degli elementi centrali, migliorando la memoria. Il secondo studio ha esaminato gli effetti dell’aumento della vigilanza sotto stress attraverso la risposta di startle uditiva, 24 ore dopo, in associazione con un odore percepito durante il fattore di stress. Il miglioramento della memoria e la reattività allo startle sono stati ulteriormente testati subito dopo il fattore di stress in un terzo studio. I risultati dei tre studi contribuiscono alla comprensione degli effetti fisiologici e comportamentali immediati e a lungo termine dello stress.
