Arnold Stanfield had big dreams, even from the age of six. He wanted to be a professional painter. Becoming a civil engineer, a career that could have brought him momentary gains, didn’t diminish his love of art. But Arnold felt the call of God, urging him to follow His plan for his life, a plan that would not only honor God, but would fulfill Arnold’s dream of becoming a professional painter. When he was in his 30s, he surrendered to God’s call to paint. He took his wife, who was eager to follow him, and entered into a new era. They claimed their recently purchased mountain in Cosby, Tennessee, and moved onto the rugged, undeveloped land. Hard work and trials deep in the hollow at the base of their mountain, where no one had lived for thirty years, was enough to make anyone run for civilization. But Arnold and Loretta felt the presence of God as they walked on the mountain God had called them to inhabit. It was with joy and expectation that Arnold and Loretta struggled with the undeveloped mountain and felt the presence of God as He walked the harsh mountain terrain with them.Arnold Stanfield surrendered his dream to God and then watched God perform miracles on a cold, treacherous, and void mountain. 3

As the title suggests, we are here addressing the most fundamental questions: Who is man? What is art? What is the bond that unites man, nature and art? The argument at the heart of this book is that what should be common to all men and women-a natural affinity with the sacred that holds out the promise of spiritual experience in everyday life- is in fact made all but impossibl...
