This collection of poems is the result of a joint project between myself (Horticultural Science Professor, University of Minnesota, USA) and Lynn Silverman (Photography Professor, Maryland Institute College of Art, USA) while we were in the Czech Republic as J. William Fulbright Scholars. Together with my late husband, Mark Gilquist (Mathematics Professor, Anoka-Hennepin School District, MN USA), we explored a number of Jewish cemeteries (židovský hřbitov) around Bohemia and Moravia as an alternative way to experience the Holocaust’s impacts. I recorded plants which thrived in these abandoned oases. After visits to 7 židovský hřbitov, I wrote poems to encapsulate their horticultural history, destructive past, and modern-day desecration. On 18 May 2016, during our 'Still...Life' exhibition at the Weisman Art Museum (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN USA), I read these 7 poems and presented history and photographs to provide additional context. This, in its entirety, is what is contained in this monograph.

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • The Truth about A
    Maureen O'Shaughnessy
In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...

We often read or hear persons referring to their dreams or visions. Years ago, my wife, Linda, and I went to China to smuggle Bibles to our persecuted Christian brethren there. That trip providentially brought Neil Anderson and his family into our lives. The Lord clearly merged our lives to Neil and The Sowers Ministry for the purpose of reaching millions of people in the 10/40...
