Dhaka è una delle città più densamente popolate del mondo. L’aumento degli abitanti della città, l’urbanizzazione e l’industrializzazione non pianificate hanno già avuto ripercussioni sulle componenti ambientali dell’area cittadina. Hazaribagh è un’area residenziale e industriale della città, dove circa 185 concerie svolgono le loro attività e lavorano 220 tonnellate di pelle al giorno e 40-50 litri di liquido per ogni chilogrammo di pelle. Gli effluenti industriali di Hazaribagh vengono scaricati nelle terre basse e nei canali con alte concentrazioni di Na, Mg, Ca, NH4, Cl, SO4 e metalli pesanti, in particolare Cr, Fe, S, Mn, Zn, associati a un’elevata materia organica. L’accumulo eccessivo di Cr viene rilevato nel terreno superiore e diminuisce significativamente al di sotto dei 3,0 m, mentre Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cu vengono rilevati fino alla profondità di 6 m. Sebbene la contaminazione delle acque sotterranee profonde non sia stata notata e il governo abbia deciso di spostare le concerie dalla città, è necessario riabilitare il terreno superiore già contaminato e l’acqua fluviale inquinata e applicare la legge e le norme sulla conservazione dell’ambiente per ridurre la vulnerabilità della contaminazione delle acque.
