À l’époque moderne, elle a atteint desproportions épidémiques .La prévalence des caries dentaires dans les pays développés varie fortement et peut atteindre plus de 90 % .Ce livre met en évidence l’induction de la carie dentaire qui implique plusieurs protéines de S. Mutans ,et servira de modèle pour la préparation d’autres constructions génétiques à inclure dans un vaccin dentaire combiné . Lesrésultats obtenus auront un impact sur le développement futur de vaccins , non seulement contre S. mutans, mais aussi contre d’autres agents pathogènes utilisant la muqueuse des voies respiratoires, gastro-intestinales et génito-urinaires comme voie d’entrée dans l’hôte.
