Imagen por imagen, originalmente publicado en 1987, recoge ensayos sobre la naturaleza del cine y estudios y críticas sobre más de doscientas películas, publicados por Desiderio Blanco en las revistas Hablemos de Cine y Oiga, entre 1965 y 1977. Ordenados cronológicamente, los textos permiten al lector atestiguar el paulatino desarrollo de las herramientas conceptuales y de los principios teóricos que fueron dando forma a la concepción del cine que Desiderio Blanco después formalizaría en su trabajo académico.Complementan el contenido de la edición original de Imagen por imagen tres textos fundamentales: el artículo escrito por Desiderio Blanco con motivo de cumplirse los diez años del estreno de Viaje a Italia de Roberto Rossellini, considerada el albor de la modernidad cinematográfica; el análisis estético e ideológico de Escenas de la vida conyugal, de Ingmar Bergman, con el que Blanco da inicio al análisis semiótico del cine en el Perú; y una entrevista concedida por Blanco a Giancarlo Carbone en la que explica su derrotero, sustenta la elección de su punto de vista como crítico y responde a múltiples cuestionamientos.Además de recoger textos fundamentales sobre la apreciación del cine en nuestro país, esta reedición busca ser, a poco de su partida, un homenaje a Desiderio Blanco, pionero de la crítica cinematográfica en el Perú.
