Le pourcentage élevé de couples sans enfant non désiré dans les pays industrialisés occidentaux nécessite depuis longtemps des solutions créatives afin de permettre à ces couples de fonder une famille. Ce travail examine comment les familles fondées à l’aide d’un don de sperme - les familles issues de l’insémination - se perçoivent elles-mêmes dans le contexte des normes sociales et de la définition historique et sociale du concept de famille. Une attention particulière est accordée aux hommes dans leur rôle de père. Ce travail montre que ces hommes sont très conscients de leur rôle de père et accordent une importance particulière aux aspects psychosociaux dans leur compréhension de ce rôle. Un autre aspect de ce travail est consacré à l’éducation de l’enfant et à la manière d’aborder l’histoire de la famille dans le milieu social. La cohérence et l’authenticité, facteurs élémentaires de l’image de soi, contribuent particulièrement à faire de la famille une expérience réussie dans ces conditions particulières et à percevoir la différence comme une normalité.
