Back in print in this new, revised edition featuring pieces that did not appear in the original, Joseph Massey's Illocality is a revelation of season and setting. In an ironic turn against the collection's title, his poems are all about place, all about the immediacy of the moment. His poems focus on details as small as, "A diseased shrub // [absorbing] / the leftover glow" to bring us a rendering of the beautiful chaos around us which reflects a chaos within. His work has been called a "poetry of the environment," and indeed, while "December / reverberates with decay," in the end the speaker lives life "condensed. . . to forsythia's / rhythm."

    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. • A New Silence

"Observant, musical, coheres to nature; it's been a pleasure to read Joseph Massey for some years now. A poetry pared down to the essential inside the world where language interacts with itself and becomes the landscape it emerges from. Musically tipped-in to a vigilant consciousness. Cool clear eye and careful ear make for distilled moments of the real. Making a whole from...

  • Present Conditions (the Hollyridge Press Chapbook Series)

In his new chapbook, Present Conditions, Joseph Massey writes that "the weather within / is the weather without." His poems chronicle a difficult winter where the universe grows colder, his speaker taking all day to "filter out the debris of a dream."  These poems bring us the aching beauty of the natural world, and the crushing sadness of interior space.  A speaker's faile...
