Le banche del settore pubblico (PSB) sono le banche in cui la maggioranza (cioè più del 50%) è detenuta dal governo. Il Governo indiano è entrato nel settore bancario per attuare l’agenda sociale di estendere la portata geografica e la diffusione funzionale dei servizi finanziari a settori fino ad allora trascurati come l’agricoltura e i poveri delle campagne, con la nazionalizzazione della Imperial Bank of India nel 1955, ribattezzata State Bank of India, delle altre sette banche statali nazionalizzate il 19 luglio 1960 (ora filiali della SBI), di 14 grandi banche nel 1969 e di altre sei banche nell’aprile 1980. Social Banking è il termine coniato dal Prof. D.R. Gadgil, Presidente del Comitato per il quadro organizzativo per l’attuazione degli obiettivi sociali (1968). Il Social Banking comprende i prestiti al settore prioritario e l’espansione delle filiali nelle aree rurali e semi-urbane. In seguito, l’inclusione finanziaria è diventata una componente del Social Banking nel 2008 (il rapporto del Comitato sull’inclusione finanziaria è stato presentato nel 2008). Lo studio è stato intrapreso per avere una visione delle attività di Social Banking implementate dalle banche commerciali del settore pubblico in generale e dalla State Bank of Hyderabad in particolare.
