I metaboliti secondari presenti negli estratti vegetali hanno molte proprietà interessanti in diversi campi: farmaceutico, cosmetico, alimentare e chimico! I prodotti del mondo vegetale sono da tempo utilizzati per proteggere i metalli dalla corrosione (grassi animali e vegetali, estratti di tannini). Questi estratti naturali contengono numerose famiglie di composti organici naturali (flavonoidi, alcaloidi, tannini, ecc.) che sono 'ecologici', facilmente disponibili e rinnovabili. Il sargassum (una macrofita marrone della famiglia delle Fucaceae) è ricco di materia organica e può essere considerato una promettente fonte naturale di molecole biodegradabili e inibitrici della corrosione. Facilmente accessibile e disponibile, il sargassum occupa attualmente un posto importante nel paesaggio marino della Martinica, grazie alle massicce invasioni dell’ultimo decennio. Inoltre, la scelta di inibitori derivati dal sargassum sta aprendo nuove strade per lo sfruttamento di questa alga.
