I due testi che compongono questo libro trattano il tema del razzismo. Con approcci diversi, riflettono su una certa costruzione ideologica che gerarchizza gli esseri umani in base al colore della pelle, all’origine geografica e al patrimonio culturale. Sono testi complementari. Il primo, incentrato sulla città di San Paolo, mostra l’incipiente ascesa sociale di uomini e donne neri, liberi o liberati, a partire dalla seconda metà del XIX secolo, che tuttavia fu bloccata da iniziative legali e azioni amministrative delle oligarchie che avevano beneficiato della schiavitù per oltre 350 anni. L’articolo mostra che, oltre a essere 'abbandonate al loro destino' dopo che la schiavitù divenne illegale, esse furono oggetto di azioni che impedirono concretamente tale ascesa. Il secondo articolo cerca di discutere alcuni paradigmi prodotti da intellettuali che riflettevano il pensiero di queste stesse oligarchie; come l’idea di una schiavitù mite e di un rapporto fraterno tra schiavisti e schiavizzati, frutto della presunta 'natura cordiale' di questi ultimi e della loro passiva sottomissione. Questo rapporto porterebbe alla costruzione di una 'democrazia razziale'.
