Sebbene i due Stati non siano mai entrati in conflitto diretto e non vi siano controversie territoriali tra loro, il programma nucleare iraniano e il potenziale sviluppo di armi nucleari hanno acuito le tensioni tra i due Paesi. Anche se l’Iran sviluppasse la capacità di produrre armi nucleari, il loro utilizzo a fini offensivi sarebbe impensabile, dato l’equilibrio di forze a livello internazionale e nella regione. Per dirla senza mezzi termini, l’Iran verrebbe probabilmente ridotto in mille pezzi se utilizzasse una bomba radioattiva. Qualsiasi capacità bellica verrebbe probabilmente sviluppata per scoraggiare belligeranti come gli Stati Uniti e Israele, poiché l’Iran non è in grado di scoraggiarli con mezzi convenzionali. Si sostiene inoltre che Israele difficilmente lancerebbe un attacco militare contro l’Iran, poiché quest’ultimo possiede la capacità militare di rispondere a un attacco militare israeliano. L’Iran reagirebbe incoraggiando i suoi proxy nella regione, in particolare Hezbollah e Hamas.
