Il Pirata is a melodramatic opera in two acts with music by Vincenzo Bellini and an Italian libretto by Felice Romani, based on a French translation of the novel Bertram, or the Castle of St. Aldobrand by Charles Maturin. First performed at La Scala in Milan in 1827, 'Il Pirata' established Bellini’s reputation as a leading composer of his day. The opera tells a story of love, betrayal, and revenge set against a backdrop of political intrigue and maritime adventure. Imogene, forced to marry her enemy Ernesto, still loves Gualtiero, the pirate of the title.Romani’s libretto is known for its dramatic intensity and poetic language, perfectly complementing Bellini’s soaring melodies and expressive harmonies.
