Durante la produzione di allumina, la formazione di incrostazioni di alluminosilicato di sodio nei tubi di processo, nei recipienti e nelle attrezzature è un problema importante. Le due forme più comuni di incrostazioni sono la sodalite e la cancrinite. Questo studio è stato intrapreso per ottenere una maggiore comprensione del processo di incrostazione, in particolare i meccanismi, la sovrasaturazione e la cinetica delle reazioni di desilication, che portano alla precipitazione delle incrostazioni. Le solubilità di equilibrio della sodalite e della cancrinite nel liquido Bayer sintetico esaurito sono state determinate in un ampio intervallo di temperature (90 -220 °C). La cinetica di crescita della sodalite e della cancrinite è stata misurata e ha seguito una dipendenza di 2° e 3° ordine rispetto a SiO2, rispettivamente, con energie di attivazione corrispondenti di 30 ± 2 kJ mol-1 e 80 ± 5 kJ mol-1. La trasformazione di fase da sodalite a cancrinite è stata studiata e trovata essere un processo mediato dalla soluzione con un’energia di attivazione di 133 kJ mol-1. Nel complesso, il livello di incrostazioni sugli scambiatori di calore può essere ridotto se si adotta una strategia di semina in un ambiente vegetale.
