Il dott. Ambedkar è nato in una famiglia di intoccabili, originari di Konkan, una parte dell’attuale Stato del Maharashtra. Il termine intoccabile necessita di qualche elaborazione. È un fatto ben noto che l’organizzazione sociale della società indù si è basata sulla teoria di Chatur Varnya e Chatur Varnya significa la divisione della società in quattro classi o Varna: i Brahmini, gli Kshatriya, i Vaishya e gli Shudra. Quelli appartenenti all’ultimo Varna maggiore nominato sono propriamente noti come intoccabili. Sebbene studiosi e storici differiscano sull’origine precisa di questa peculiare stratificazione della società indù, è generalmente concordato che nel primo periodo ariano il sistema delle caste non esisteva. Fu solo più tardi, quando il sistema di divisione del lavoro entrò in vigore tra gli ariani, che la società fu divisa in quattro caste diverse. Ma bisogna sottolineare che queste caste non si basavano sulla casualità della nascita, bensì sull’occupazione in cui una persona era effettivamente impegnata.
