L’acqua è una delle risorse il cui utilizzo è considerato strategico per il futuro patrimonio geopolitico. Le dighe sono sempre state uno dei simboli delle imprese umane che consentono di produrre energia a basso costo e di controllare le inondazioni per l’agricoltura. Tuttavia, le cosiddette 'grandi dighe', imponenti strutture artificiali, sono state costruite in numero sempre maggiore, richiedendo complesse soluzioni dal punto di vista tecnico. Sebbene siano state considerate dai governi una soluzione praticabile per diversi problemi, esse possono danneggiare gravemente le condizioni di vita delle popolazioni locali. È quanto sta accadendo sul fiume Omo in Etiopia. Il governo vuole compiere un balzo verso la 'modernità' aggirando i diritti e gli usi delle popolazioni locali attraverso la costruzione della quarta diga più grande del mondo, la Gibe III. Duecentomila persone sono minacciate dalle conseguenze ambientali in corso e devono affrontare anche gli effetti dei cambiamenti climatici. Pertanto, il lavoro vuole far luce sulle questioni relative allo sviluppo dell’Etiopia, cercando di delineare un quadro di analisi ampio attraverso una prospettiva socio-ecologica sull’attuale dramma del fiume Omo.
