Este trabalho foi concebido como uma tentativa de utilizar os termos hibridismo e terceiro espaço na arqueologia histórica com uma análise comparativa das primeiras igrejas coloniais e habitações maias na Península de Yucatán e no Belize. Esta análise teve como objetivo reconsiderar a influência das sociedades indígenas nos encontros coloniais, representada como cultura material híbrida. A ideia era romper com os modelos binários e as abordagens eurocêntricas colonizador-doador vs colonizado-recetor nos encontros coloniais, apresentando, em vez disso, uma relação ambivalente em que a identidade e a materialidade do colonizador e do colonizado são negociadas e recriadas. O colonialismo no México é examinado mostrando como as instituições coloniais de poder estabeleceram a base para um novo urbanismo e arquitetura religiosa.
