En 1924 Teresa de la Parra publicó Ifigenia, su novela más conocida, en la que denuncia el drama de la mujer frente a una sociedad que no le permite tener voz propia y cuya única opción es el matrimonio legalmente constituido. Con esta obra participó en un concurso literario en París en el que obtuvo el primer premio y gracias al cual pudo ser traducida al francés por Francisco de Miomandre, un conocido escritor que hacía de puente entre Hispanoamérica y Europa. Ifigenia fue un título que se puso en último momento, el anterior: Diario de una señorita que escribió porque se fastidiaba, hacía referencia a una joven educada en París que, cuando regresa a su tierra natal, Venezuela, se encuentra con una sociedad que no le permite expresar sus ideas ni elegir su camino en la vida.
