Das Buch befasst sich mit Deleuzes Kritik an den Konzepten von Aristoteles und Hegel über die Beziehung zwischen den Begriffen Identität und Differenz. Zunächst wird das aristotelische Konzept von Identität und Differenz vorgestellt, ausgehend vom Ausschluss des Widerspruchs aus dem Bereich des Denkens und Seins. Anschließend wird Hegels Kritik an der abstrakten Identität behandelt und die Formulierung des Hegelschen Konzepts der absoluten Identität vorgestellt. Schließlich legt das Buch Deleuzes Kritik an der endlichen und unendlichen Repräsentation dar, um das Deleuzesche Konzept der reinen Differenz einzuführen.
