Esta obra intenta un análisis del debatido tema de los antecedentes de la emancipación de Chile, reuniendo y coordinando observaciones y hallazgos desperdigados, y añadiendo puntos de vista que ayudan a clarificar el problema. Siendo la independencia un fenómeno continental, fácil es hallar similitudes entre lo ocurrido en Chile y otros sitios de América. Con todo, este libro no pretende ser una teoría general de la emancipación, sino una reflexión frente al caso chileno. Como toda ciencia, la historia es dinámica y no puede enquistarse en fórmulas dogmáticas. El fallo del historiador está sujeto a una continua confrontación con el material proporcionado por las nuevas investigaciones.
