Os países em desenvolvimento carecem geralmente de capital suficiente para impulsionar o crescimento económico e o desenvolvimento, pelo que os fluxos de IDE são necessários para aumentar o capital nacional, de modo a ajudar a acelerar o ritmo do crescimento económico e do desenvolvimento nestes países. Na Nigéria, o desempenho económico global desde a independência tem sido bastante inexpressivo. Apesar da disponibilidade de enormes recursos petrolíferos, a sua taxa de crescimento tem sido bastante fraca. Este fraco desempenho económico, especialmente nas últimas três décadas, tem sido atribuído a uma série de factores, mais particularmente ao colapso dos investimentos nos anos 80 e seguintes. Neste contexto, o estudo utiliza técnicas econométricas recentes para examinar criticamente a relação entre o IDE e o crescimento económico na Nigéria, tanto a curto como a longo prazo, desde o período da independência política da Nigéria até 2012.
