There is nothing magical about Tatyana Uspenskaya’s (Oshanina) novel I Want to Be a Wizard. On the contrary, its action is extremely harsh and realistic: it takes place in Russia in the 90s of the twentieth century-in the bloodiest years of perestroika.Young, enthusiastic, educated, honest people believed the authorities, who allowed private enterprise, and started to create their own companies in order to become active and decide something for themselves in their country. Many of them were destroyed - they became victims of rabid mobsters who knew only how to steal and kill. Many middle-aged people also died, having lost the opportunity to engage in science, teaching, deprived of elementary means of subsistence, and many elderly people who could not withstand deep poverty, hunger, insecurity of everyday life. Not intelligence, not law ruled the country, but violence and lawlessness.The novel is based on the tragic story of two main characters, Nikolai and Vasily, who are linked by a common grief - the death of their loved ones during the period of perestroika - and therefore knocked out of normal existence, and then gradually come back to life. They were on the peak of despair, but managed to rise above their grief and learn to absorb not only misfortune, but also the beautiful things that give birth to a new life.The title of the novel refers more to the author herself than to the plot. The author is not ready to be humbled, she believes that there is another world in which righteousness is rewarded and murder is punished. She really wants to be a wizard....В романе Татьяны Успенской Я хочу быть волшебником нет ничего волшебного. Наоборот, его действие крайне сурово и реалистично: оно происходит в России в 90‑х годах двадцатого века - ​в самые кровавые годы перестройки.Молодые, горячие, образованные, чистые люди поверили власти, разрешившей частное предпринимательство, и начали создавать собственные компании, чтобы активно работать и самим что‑то решать в своей стране. Многие из них были уничтожены - ​стали жертвами оголтелых бандитов, умеющих лишь воровать и убивать. Погибло много людей средних лет, потерявших возможность заниматься наукой, преподаванием, лишившихся элементарных средств к существованию, и очень много пожилых людей, не выдержавших глубокой нищеты, голода, незащищённости повседневной жизни. В основе романа лежит трагическая история двух героев, Николая и Василия, связанных общим горем - ​гибелью в период перестройки близких людей - ​и поэтому выбитых из нормального существования, а затем постепенно возвращающихся к жизни.Название же романа больше относится к самому автору, чем к сюжету. Автору, не готовому смириться, верящему в то, что есть другой мир, в котором воздаётся за праведность и наказывается убийство. Ей очень хочется быть волшебником...
