L’obiettivo di questo lavoro è indagare alcuni presupposti ideologici considerati essenziali per comprendere le riforme dello Stato portoghese intraprese tra il 1750 e il 1777 da Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo (1699-1782), conte di Oeiras e marchese di Pombal, all’epoca primo ministro del re José I del Portogallo. Strettamente associati al consolidamento del Regalismo, questi assunti sono radicati sia nella diagnosi di Pombal della realtà vissuta dal Portogallo sia nel suo progetto di costruire una nuova identità portoghese. Nel primo caso, essi convergono fondamentalmente sull’idea di 'arretratezza' o 'inadeguatezza' del Portogallo rispetto al livello economico, culturale e intellettuale delle principali nazioni europee dell’epoca, in particolare dell’Inghilterra. Ovviamente, questa idea servì come giustificazione di base per tutti i cambiamenti che egli richiese e che effettivamente realizzò. Nel secondo caso, i presupposti ideologici sono fondamentalmente gli ideali lusitani dell’uomo e della società che Pombal cercava.
