La Costa d’Avorio è un paese dell’Africa occidentale, confinante con il Ghana a est, il Burkina Faso e il Mali a nord, la Guinea e la Liberia a ovest e il Golfo di Guinea a sud. Ha una popolazione di 23.295.302 e copre una superficie di 322.463 km². La lingua ufficiale è il francese, sebbene si parli anche un gran numero di dialetti nativi. (CIA, 11 febbraio 2016). La World Culture Encyclopedia (WCE) spiega l’origine del nome del paese: 'Nel XV secolo, i mercanti francesi e portoghesi in cerca di avorio chiamarono la regione Costa d’Avorio per la sua abbondanza della risorsa naturale. Il paese ha cambiato il suo nome in Costa d’Avorio nel 1985; il suo nome ufficiale è République de Côte d’Ivoire - un riflesso del controllo francese del paese dal 1843 fino all’indipendenza.' (WCE, 2015) Per quanto riguarda la situazione economica e sociale in Costa d’Avorio, un rapporto dell’aprile 2015 dell’Esperto indipendente sul rafforzamento delle capacità e la cooperazione tecnica con la Costa d’Avorio nel campo dei diritti umani spiega: 'Un’economia fiorente può fornire un terreno fertile per far fiorire i diritti umani.
