Chinonso S. Obiakor is a Nigerian writer and thinker whose work explores identity, language, and the power of naming. He studied Theology at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome and is now based in Italy, where his writing is shaped by the tension between origin and self-definition.In I Am Not Africa, he offers a bold and thought-provoking exploration of identity and the legacy of history. The book challenges the idea that vast and diverse peoples can be reduced to a single name-especially one shaped by outsiders-and raises a deeper question: Who has the right to define a people?Through reflective and critical storytelling, Obiakor examines how identities formed during the era of colonization continue to shape perception today, while also confronting how these labels are sometimes accepted and reinforced from within. Ultimately, he argues that true freedom lies not only in rejecting imposed identities, but in reclaiming the power of self-definition.
