Hymen’s Recruiting-Sergeant: Or The New Matrimonial Tattoo For Old Bachelors is a satirical novel written by Mason Locke Weems in 1845. The book follows the story of a middle-aged bachelor named Ned Hazard who is convinced by his friends to get married. However, Hazard is hesitant and skeptical about the idea of marriage, and he sets out to find a wife who meets his high standards. The novel is a humorous commentary on the social norms and expectations of marriage in the mid-19th century. Weems uses the character of Hazard to poke fun at the idea of marriage as a means of social status and financial security. The book is also a critique of the societal pressure placed on men to get married and start a family. Throughout the novel, Hazard encounters a variety of women who do not meet his expectations, including a wealthy widow, a flirtatious young woman, and a plain-looking schoolteacher. Eventually, he meets a woman who he believes is perfect for him, but she is already engaged to another man. Hymen’s Recruiting-Sergeant: Or The New Matrimonial Tattoo For Old Bachelors is a witty and entertaining novel that provides insight into the social attitudes towards marriage in the mid-19th century. Weems’ use of satire and humor makes for an enjoyable read that is still relevant today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
