Wasser ist einer der wichtigsten Lebensgrundstoffe und galt lange Zeit als Ursache für Krankheiten beim Menschen. Erst vor etwa 150 Jahren wurde der eindeutige Nachweis für die Übertragung von Krankheiten durch Wasser erbracht. In den folgenden Jahren lag der Schwerpunkt darauf, eine ausreichende Versorgung mit hygienisch unbedenklichem Wasser sicherzustellen. Allerdings sind die Wasserquellen (Oberflächen- und Grundwasser) aufgrund natürlicher und anthropogener Aktivitäten zunehmend verschmutzt. Diese Situation ist im Südwesten Bangladeschs besonders akut, wo der Klimawandel drastische Auswirkungen auf die Wasserversorgung und die Gesundheit hat. In diesem Buch möchte ich das Problem der Wasserverschmutzung und den Zustand der hygienischen Integrität anhand einer Risikobewertung darlegen. Darüber hinaus tragen alternative Lösungen für die Wasserversorgung auf Gemeindeebene wesentlich zum Wohlergehen der Einwohner Bangladeschs bei.
