Arthur Harris, a hayseed from Montgomery County, Arkansas, is called up for the Great War. An encounter in the ship’s library opens his eyes to wonders he only dreamed of; his love and aptitude for horses on the farm opened doors for him in the Army. Through the travel and horrors of war and injuries, he is transferred to a veterinary hospital and is able to form an attachment with a Hello Girl in France to work as a switchboard soldier.He returned to Arkansas with an opportunity to be something other than a farmer. Through the trials and persecutions of being a scholarship student, he struggles to hold on to his dreams of being a veterinarian and keeping in touch with the Hello Girl.
