Honesty, Fairness, and Corruption in European History - Volume 1

In Honesty, Fairness, and Corruption in European History, Volume I, Dr. Sascha Ferber delivers a masterful, deeply researched work of institutional history grounded in exhaustive scholarship and factual rigor. He masterfully synthesizes Adam Smith’s moral philosophy (sympathy and the impartial spectator) with Weber, Ordoliberalism, Sen, North, Acemoglu & Robinson, and Putnam. The book meticulously examines nine pivotal configurations: classic decline patterns in the Late Roman Empire, Ottoman Empire, South Italy, Habsburg Spain, Ancien Régime France, and Eastern empires-contrasted with the institutional innovations of the Hanseatic League’s reputation economy, the Renaissance republics of Florence, Venice, and Genoa, and the Dutch Republic’s pioneering federalism, VOC, and Wisselbank.Bolstered by the groundbreaking 'Atlas of Thirty Cases' (from ancient Athens to Iceland’s 2008 accountability and EU enlargement), Ferber distills four recurring mechanisms of institutional decline and their positive mirror images, rigorously tracing causal links to economic and social performance. His central scholarly achievement is the programmatic thesis of substantive over procedural economic ethics: true prosperity demands the active cultivation of individual integrity, civil society, and cultural norms rather than bureaucratic overreach. This factually unassailable, analytically sharp volume not only advances historical understanding but equips readers with essential insights for today. Amid corruption scandals, institutional erosion, polarization, and geopolitical rivalry with authoritarian powers, Ferber’s work powerfully demonstrates that the ethical cultivation of integrity by engaged citizens remains the indispensable foundation of prosperity, resilience, and freedom in the 21st century.
