Na oprichten van een eigen partij, een mislukte staatsgreep in Beieren, vele knokpartijen door zijn volgelingen met anders denkenden en een rij verkiezingen, kreeg hij uiteindelijk de macht in Duitsland. Zijn plannen waren al lang duidelijk: wraak op Frankrijk, terug verkrijgen van vroegere Duitse gebieden en het allerbelangrijkste: gebieds-uitbreiding naar het oosten.
