Dahns Popularität gründete vor allem auf einem historischen Roman. Mit einem insgesamt ca. 30.000 Druckseiten umfassenden Œuvre zählt Felix Dahn zu den produktivsten Autoren seiner Zeit. Zwischen 1882 und 1901 ließ Dahn in 13 Bänden Romane aus der Völkerwanderung, zwischen 1890 und 1895 ebenfalls in mehreren Bänden eine etwa dreitausendseitige Autobiografie folgen. • Aus dem Buch 'Attila': • 'Dunkel lag die schwüle Sommernacht auf dem gewaltigen Donaustrom. - Fast einem Meeresarme glich die unüberblickbare Breite der Fluten, die, an den beiden Uferseiten oft in Schlamm versumpfend, auch in der Mitte des Bettes die ungeheueren Massen ihrer Gewässer nur träge vorwärts wälzten nach Osten: denn sehr zahlreich waren die kleinen Werder, die, mit Busch- und Baumwerk üppig begrünt, dem rinnenden Zuge hemmend sich vorgelagert hatten. - Eines dieser schmalen Eilande erhob sich nur wenig über den Spiegel des Flusses; rings von manneshohem Schilf umgürtet trug es nur ein paar Bäume: uralte Weidenstämme, nicht sehr hoch aufgeschossen, jedoch von mächtigstem Umfang, knorrig, mit phantastischen Auswüchsen an Krone, Ästen und Rinde. Der Mond stand nicht am Himmel; und die Sterne waren bedeckt von dichtem Gewölk, das der feuchtwarme Südwest mit triefenden Schwingen langsam vor sich her schob. Im fernen Osten aber zuckte zuweilen fahler Schein über den schwarzen Himmel hin, geisterhaft, unheimlich...'
