Este último tomo de la Historia política de Chile está dedicado a entregar al lector un panorama amplio y completo de las ideologías que han orientado la discusión en la política nacional durante los dos últimos siglos. Los procesos y los debates de ideas durante el siglo XIX se centraron en temas como la laicización del pensamiento, la lucha entre liberales y conservadores y el rol de la historia nacional en el orden político. La guerra civil de 1891 cierra ese periodo y marca el inicio de un nuevo ciclo político que, asentado en la industrialización del país, da origen a la aparición del pensamiento y los partidos de izquierda y a la reacción ante ello de la derecha tradicional, polarizando las opciones ideológicas en un proceso continuo que llega hasta hoy. El rol de los intelectuales en la lucha política del siglo XX es muy bien analizado en este tomo, que ofrece al lector novedosos y actualizados capítulos sobre el pensamiento político en el proceso de transición iniciado en 1990 y sobre el pensamiento político mapuche, con interesantes visiones sobre las luchas actuales del pueblo mapuche. 10
