Como práctica de explotación del trabajo y como institución jurídica y política, que despojaba de derechos fundamentales a cientos de miles de afrodescendientes, la esclavitud continuó en Hispanoamérica después de las independencias de inicios del siglo XIX. Las nuevas repúblicas mantuvieron o renovaron mecanismos de manumisión, tuición, patronato o leyes de libertad de vientres, heredados del imperio borbónico. Las aboliciones fueron produciéndose sucesivamente en aquellas repúblicas entre los años 1820 y 1860 y alcanzaron a las últimas colonias caribeñas de España, Puerto Rico y Cuba entre 1870 y 1886. Fuera por decreto legislativo o gubernamental, por cambio constitucional, luego de rebeliones antiesclavistas o de guerras civiles, aquellas aboliciones nunca llegaron a ser definitivas y preservaron formas de trabajo no libre por décadas. Este libro narra cómo fue que más de 330 000 negros esclavos asumieron diversas categorías de libertos en la abolición chilena en 1823 y la cubana en 1886.
