A literatura recente que descreve os hidrocarbonetos aromáticos policíclicos (HAP) no ar, na água, no solo e nos sedimentos, nas lamas residuais, na biomonitorização e na toxicidade é revista. São discutidos aspectos da amostragem e da preparação das amostras, como a extração de HAP, e são também revistos os métodos analíticos utilizados. São referidos os desenvolvimentos em técnicas de medição direta, como a espetrometria de absorção ultravioleta e a luminescência síncrona. Esta revisão também aborda a reabilitação microbiana de PAH e a degradação de PAH, com ênfase nos factores biológicos e físico-químicos que influenciam a biodegradação.
