Diese Daten vermitteln ein Bild davon, wie sich das Land Hessen und die Lebensumstände der hier lebenden Menschen in den zurückliegenden 50 Jahren gewandelt haben, wo und wann es zu einer Beschleunigung von Wandlungsprozessen kam, und was die jeweiligen Rahmenbedingungen von Ereignissen waren, auf die aus den unterschiedlichsten Gründen das Interesse gerichtet sein mag. In vielem schließt dieser Band unmittelbar an die 1986 aus Anlaß des 125jährigen Jubiläums der amtlichen Statistik in Hessen herausgebrachte Veröffentlichung 'Hessen im Wandel' an und führt vor allem die Zeitreihen fort. Die Neukonzeption einiger Teilbereiche und Themen war erforderlich, um bestimmten Entwicklungen des letzten Jahrzehnts gerecht zu werden.
