Esta es la historia de un niño sin padre, abandonado por su madre, criado por su medio hermano, que logra, mediante su esfuerzo, llegar a ser Ingeniero de Minas, miembro del primer curso del Colegio de Minería de Copiapó, fundador y varias veces presidente del Instituto de Ingenieros de Chile, profesor de la Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas de la Universidad de Chile; miembro fundador, presidente y vicepresidente de la «Société Scientifique du Chili»; empresario minero, «redescubridor» y primer dueño del mineral de cobre de Chuquicamata; vicepresidente por muchos años de la Sociedad Nacional de Minería, corredactor en la modernización del Código de Minería, cofundador de la ciudad de Antofagasta, Gobernador del Puerto de Caldera al comienzo de la Guerra del Pacífico, organizador del famoso Batallón Atacama, con los mineros chilenos desplazados de Perú y Bolivia; explorador del Ejercito expedicionario en dicha contienda, gran aventurero, hombre audaz que fue partidario de Balmaceda y que perdió gran parte de sus bienes en la revolución de 1891; pero, sobre todo, un hombre justo, de ideas modernas y que, en las instituciones en las que le tocó estar, llegó a tener un liderazgo y una autoridad basada en su enorme saber y experiencia.
