Oftmals ist es eine entscheidende, handlungsinitiierende Rolle, manchmal aber auch nur ein banales Nebenthema. Trotzdem kann der Leser jedes Mal etwas mit dieser beschriebenen Liebe anfangen, ob er sie nun nachempfinden, verstehen oder kritisch hinterfragen kann. Die Darstellung der Liebe, ihre Erscheinungsformen und ihre Problematik waren auch schon in der Literatur des 12. Und 13. Jahrhunderts ein beliebtes Thema (1), so auch im 'Iwein' von Hartmann von Aue.Doch das Besondere am Lesen mittelalterlicher Texte ist, dass man die Wörter und ihre Übersetzungen nicht immer eins zu eins in das Wortverständnis des 21. Jahrhunderts übertragen kann. Es geht sogar so weit, dass die Übertragung den eigentlichen Sinn des mittelalterlichen Textes unter Umständen verfälscht (2).
