Arendt zufolge hat uns die amerikanische Revolution die menschliche Fähigkeit vor Augen geführt, Worte und Taten auf der Suche nach Freiheit im öffentlichen Raum zu vereinen. Die Autorin zeigt, wie die moderne Demokratie eine neue Vorstellung von Freiheit hervorbringt, in der die öffentliche Sphäre allmählich verbannt wird und die Macht allmählich von der Regierung und nicht mehr vom Volk konstituiert wird.
