Auf der Grundlage des ersten, im Jahre 1898 ersQhienenen Teiles des Hand­ buches der Materialienkunde, der das Materialpriifungswesen, die Probiermaschinen und MeBinstrumente fiir die mechanische Priifung behandelte, baut sich die vor­ liegende erste HiiHte des zweiten Teiles auf, in der die allgemeinen Gesetze zur Darstellung gelangt sind, welche die mannigfaltigen Anderungen der Metalle und Legierungen im Veriauf ihrer Verarbeitung zu Gebrauchsgegenstanden beherrschen. In der spater foigenden zweiten Halfte des zweiten Teiles werden dann die tech­ nisch wichtigsten Eigenschaften der einzeinen Metalle und Legierungen im beson­ deren Berucksichtigung finden. Die erste Hii.lfte bildet somit die Grundlage fiir das Studium der folgenden zweiten Halfte. Die Lehre von den Metallen und Legierungen ist durch die Forschungen namentlich der letzten Jahrzehnte aus der Stufe der reinen Empirie, die sie bis dahin beherrschte, zu einer besonderen Wissenschaft entwickelt worden, die ihre Wurzeln in eine ganze Reihe verschiedener benachbarter Wissensgebiete, wie Chemie, Physik, Mechanik, physikalische Chemie (Phasenlehre, Thermodynamik), Mineralogie usw. hiniiberstreckt.
