Dos semanas antes de su muerte en enero de 1999, George L. Mosse, uno de los grandes historiadores del siglo XX, terminó de escribir estas memorias: un relato fascinante de una vida extraordinaria que transcurrió a lo largo de los grandes acontecimientos del siglo pasado. Esta memoria conmovedora está guiada en parte por la creencia de Mosse de que «lo que el hombre es sólo lo cuenta la historia», y por los recurrentes temas sobre el destino del liberalismo, los acontecimientos decisivos que pueden provocar el despertar político generacional de la juventud, los significados de la masculinidad y de los estereotipos raciales y sexuales, el enigma del exilio y, sobre todo, la importancia de encontrarse a uno mismo a través de la búsqueda de la verdad y de un análisis honesto e inmutable de su propio lugar en el contexto de su época.
